As a reckoning looms, the two fathers are forced to make the hardest choices of their lives. Haunted by the tragedy, both fathers react in unexpected ways, as do Grace and Emma. The police are called, and an investigation begins. The accident happens so fast that Lucas is all but unaware, while Ethan-the only witness-is all too aware, as a panicked Dwight speeds away. Driving his son back to his ex-wife, Lucas' mother Ruth Wheldon, Dwight heads towards his fateful encounter at Reservation Road. Dwight cherishes his time spent with Lucas. ![]() My guess is that critical senses are dulled because of respect for Nightingale's other achievements (and her status as an icon of various kinds) and because it's, in journalistic or historical senses, part of a cracking good story.Ī very small detail, but again one that often arises, is that Nightingale didn't intend to call the _design_ a coxcomb that was an offhand comment she made about the graph.Ī central point is to me that the circular format is at best justifiable if the pattern shown is strongly seasonal. The Economist, not usually known for sentimental slush, went all gooey about it in its Christmas issue for 2007. It's curious that this graph repeatedly gets largely uncritical reports like that quoted here - as if the story were new and as if the graph were not intensely problematic. Other visualizations of these data could include a pie graph or histogram, but the polar area diagram can make each data point “pop”.As you say, this would be much better as a line graph. The polar area diagrams using the FIA data are revealing because they show cyclical data through the calendar year and they visualize the number of plot measurements in each month. Some forest inventories occur in the winter months but in small numbers. In the Northeast, Rocky Mountain and West Coast states, the forest inventories begin in earnest in April and then mostly conclude by October. In the Southeast and North Central regions of the US, the number of forest inventories occur at generally the same rate across the year.īut in regions where snow and cold temperatures present a barrier to getting field work done in the winter, few forest inventories occur. The monthly trends in forest inventory data collection is not constant across different regions in the US. ![]() Not surprisingly, the majority of FIA plots are measured in the summer months when field work is most active. The total number of FIA plot measurements was smallest in December (12,786 measurements) and largest in June (22,836 measurements). The result was about what you might expect for a country that has mostly temperate forests and where field work is limited to many regions in the winter months. Here is a table of the results: Table 1: Number of FIA plot measurements in each month. I also filtered the data so that at least one accessible forest land condition was present on an FIA plot. This included all FIA plots that were inventoried since about the late 1990s or early 2000s for most US states. I filtered the data to obtain the measurements of all FIA plots that were collected as a part of the annual inventory design. The specific variable I was interested in was MEASMON, a variable contained in the PLOT table that lists the month in which the forest was inventoried. I queried the US Department of Agriculture’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database to obtain the months that forests were inventoried. I wanted to use polar area diagrams to answer one question: In which months do forest inventories occur across the United States? Polar area diagrams in forest inventories In celebration of Nightingale, who was born 200 years ago this year, it’s worth thinking about how polar area diagrams might be fitting to visualize forestry data. This is how Nightengale described deaths from preventable diseases, wounds, and other causes. Multiple layers can be added within a diagram. They are easy to read around the “rose” because data are presented chronologically. ![]() For example, the counts of a phenomenon in each of the 12 calendar months of a year.

The sight of a saucepan ( beurma) announces the conclusion ( anuberame) of affairs in which one is engaged. It differs, in fact, greatly from this latter flower, inasmuch as the slightest breath of wind will upset it. However, the prognostications furnished by the jessamine have not the same character of certainty as those given by the rose. ![]() ![]() The man, then, who sees a jessamine in his dream is to conclude that the deception, yas, in the name yasmine, is an untruth, and will thus be assured of the success of his enterprise. The jessamine ( yasmine) is formed of yas, signifying deception, or the happening of a thing contrary to your wish, and mine, which means untruth. It is the same with baldness of the temples, and similar things. To dream of a shield ( henafa) means the coming on of all sorts of misfortune, for this word, by a change of letters, gives koul afa, 'all bad luck.' The appearance of ostriches ( nâmate) in dreams is of bad augury, because their name being formed of nâb and mate, signifies 'news of death,' namely, peril. The sight of a lily ( sonsana) is the prognostication of a misfortune which will last a year ( son, misfortune sena, year). If he sees his nail ( defeur) reversed or upside down, this is an indication that the victory ( defeur) which he has gained over his enemies will change sides and from a victor, he will become the vanquished inversely, if he sees the nail of his enemy turned the wrong way, he can conclude that the victory which had been with his enemy will soon return to him. The teeth ( senane) represent years ( senine) if therefore a man sees in a dream a fine set of teeth, this is for him the sign of along life. I shall treat this subject more particularly in the explication of dreams. The man who dreams that his member has been cut off is certain not to live long after that dream, for, as said above, it presages the loss of his memory and the extinction of his race. The dekeur plays also an important part in dreams. When he dies they will say, 'His member has been cut off,' meaning, 'His memory is departed from the world.' When a man has met with an accident to his member, when it has been amputated, or has become weak, and he can, in consequence, no longer fulfil his conjugal duties, they say of him: 'the member of such an one is dead' which means: the remembrance of him will be lost, and his generation is cut off by the root. It’s more than just organizing your files or purging your email. #Jing screenie fullBut in a world full of tech and information streams and social media, what does digital minimalism look like? There are Instagram feeds and Facebook groups devoted to decluttering your kitchen, your closet, any part of your house. The minimalists out there say the way there is through less stuff and more intention. Questions? Let me know! Otherwise, I’ll see you next time! It’s a great tool to try as we work on digital minimalism. I’ve written an App Review on RescueTime before, which you can find here: App Review – RescueTimeĬheck it out. #Jing screenie softwareThe software allows me to see, for example, that I spent 15 minutes playing Alien Hive on my phone last night when I could swear it was only a couple of minutes before bedtime. We all get caught up sometimes, and the first part of minimizing your digital use is figuring out how you actually use your time. I use a great software called RescueTime that tracks your digital activity across all devices it is installed on – phone, computer, Internet, and tablet. How many times have you fallen down an Internet rabbit hole? Or turned on your phone just to kill time while waiting? This is especially true when it comes to surfing and Internet usage. It’s a great phrase because, with our digital life, so much of what we do is mindless. Rather receive these posts in your email? Head on over and sign up for the Ilios Digital Organizing newsletter!Īfter our talk last week about digital minimalism, I had a reader mention the phrase ‘attention management’ when it comes to working with intent. It’s a great way to minimize your digital clutter and work towards minimalism. Next time you’re sitting in front of the TV, or waiting in the pick-up line, find those seldom used or unnecessary apps and delete them. Just like we declutter our houses, we also need to declutter our phones. (Some of that is okay, but part of digital minimalism is acting with intent.) How many of those apps are you actually using? And have you thought about why you’re using those particular apps? Does each app have a purpose beyond ‘fun when I’m bored’? How many apps do you have? More than 20? More than 50? (approx. Not only using the apps, but scrolling and scrolling past screens of other apps to get to the one you want. Our phones are full of fun things and interesting information, but they’re also a big source of distracted time suck. #Jing screenie installWere there any surprises? Did you get a good idea of where you are spending your time when you are online? Did you look just at your computer, or did you also install RescueTime on your phone? Last time we talked about RescueTime and figuring out how much time you actually spend on your digital devices and what you’re doing when you are there. How’s it going getting started with digital minimalism? How is your journey into digital minimalism going? Any surprises? Anything I can do to support you? (How we respond is key to finding our distraction points during the day) Then we can make deliberate decisions about what stays and what goes. When minimizing notifications, it’s up to each of us to stop and think about why we need to be notified, what purpose the notification is serving, and what we do because of the notification. (That last one is a definite yes for me!)ĭigital minimalism looks different for each of us. Do you really need to be pinged when an email comes in or are you checking email on your own schedule? How about this week’s cookie notification from Crumbl? Or an alert when the litter box is full? But there are a lot of notifications we can remove from our daily schedule. Now, there are some notifications we definitely need – text messages are usually on that list, especially for parents. App notifications – both phone and computer – are an easy place to make those changes. ![]() ![]() Part of our journey towards digital minimalism involves downsizing and streamlining. I give my husband a hard time because he has email notifications on and I’ll be just about ready to fall asleep when ‘bing’, a new email from Amazon or Ebay or someone like that. Our phones go off at all hours of the day, demanding our attention. There’s always something else to do, listen to, or respond to. It can be hard to think about minimalism in the noise and rush of our busy lives. ![]() ![]() ![]()
